Visually, she’s just plain silly, if also adorable in a totally unawesome kind of way. Omniscience, omnipotence? Forget about it. In “Let There Be Light,” a work of biblical interpretation in comic book form, the cartoonist and illustrator Liana Finck presents us with a female God who is anything but supremely perfect.

I was going after a logical point, while at the same time trying to be funny. In the discussion, I’d refer to Descartes’s God with feminine pronouns, asserting that it’s clearer that the supremely perfect being is necessarily female than necessarily existent. None of my students ever were, even if they had trouble articulating how it goes wrong. The argument is Descartes’s, and I don’t expect you to be convinced by it.
